Is a dumbphone a good fit for me?
Two hands holding a yea or nay sign with objects symbolizing different smartphone functionality, encouraging readers to ask "is a dumbphone a good fit for me?"

As more people become fed up with screen fatigue, social media addiction, and other tradeoffs that come with the convenience of smartphones, they’re turning to dumbphones for a more intentional digital experience. Is a dumbphone a good fit for you? Everyone is different, and your personal lifestyle, professional, and social setup will determine how difficult it is to make the switch.

Pros: Why a dumbphone might be a good fit for you.

  • Dumbphones without social media and browsers limit distractions.
  • With little to no Internet access, they’re a safe alternative for children.
  • A smaller digital footprint makes it harder to steal your data.
  • Dumbphones usually have much better battery life.
  • They are more durable and affordable than the latest smartphones.

Cons: Why a dumbphone might NOT be a good fit for you.

  • The limited functionality may be frustrating if you need certain apps for daily life.
  • There are fewer communication methods (no WhatsApp, etc.) than smartphones.
  • You may not have access to certain apps you need for work.
  • Simple tasks that you used to rely on your smartphone for may become more inconvenient.
  • A dumbphone isn’t a silver bullet cure for unhealthy online habits.
Do the pros outweigh the cons? Only you can decide. Read our in-depth guide that covers how switching to a dumbphone can change your life for the better but without ignoring some scenarios where you might find it inconvenient.
Which type of dumbphone should I get?
An array of different dumbphones, prompting the reader to wonder which type of dumbphone should I get?

So you decided a dumbphone might be right for you. Whether you see it as a potential productivity booster or screen time saver, you’re ready to take the next step to untether from your smartphone. But which type of dumbphone should you get?

For the Purist: Phones without user-installed apps

These are the dumbphones that probably grabbed your attention. Depending on how you look at that them, they can simultaneously be the most freeing and most restrictive type: ultimate freedom from distractions because they completely limit apps and online connectivity. There are no app stores, web browsers, or social media, offering the purist experience for those who want to sharpen their focus, improve face-to-face social interactions, and offer a safe alternative to smartphones to young people.

More Flexibility: Phones with user-installed apps

Not everyone wants to immediately switch from a high-end smartphone to a dumbphone that you can’t add certain apps you need for daily life. It’s understandable — many of us rely on apps for ride-sharing, professional tools, or just listening to music or podcasts on Spotify for the daily commute. Some of the popular “less dumb” dumbphone options allow more apps via side-loading or simply through an app store. These options still have a classic flip phone style and discourage unnecessary screen time while allowing more of the apps you can’t do without.

How to dumbify your current smartphone

You may not be fully committed to getting a dumbphone and wish there was some way to try it before buying. Or you might align with the philosophy of fewer distractions but don’t want to drop the cash on another device. The good news is there are plenty of ways you can cut out the fluff and turn your current smartphone into a focus-driven productivity device rather than a go-to time burner whenever the itch strikes.

Switching to a dumbphone is a highly personal decision, but you have options.

You want less social media and online browsing in your life, but you still need email for work. Or perhaps you want a more basic flip phone-style experience, but with the option to add more apps as you need them. Maybe you’re not even sure if you’re ready to commit to buying another device and just want to take a simplified smartphone experience for a spin first. Whichever category you fall into, this comprehensive guide to some of the most popular dumbphone options is sure to help you on your journey.

How do I set up my dumbphone on my network?
An image of a dumbphone in space with a floating screw driver and SIM cards for an article educating people wondering how do I set up my dumbphone.

Many dumbphone buyers are attracted to the promise of more mindful living and a return to simplicity. However, making the switch from a smartphone is more complicated than one might think! Modern mobile networks are evolving, which can create compatibility issues for certain dumbphones. This deceptively complex technological hurdle can trip you up…IF you don’t do a bit of research beforehand.

Understanding network compatibility for dumbphones

  • The sunsetting of 2G/3G and shift to VoLTE – Carriers around the world are discontinuing 2G and 3G networks, so your dumbphone must support 4G LTE at minimum to be compatible with nearly all service providers.
  • Compatibility with carrier frequency bands – You should check the specs of your preferred dumbphone on the manufacturer’s website to make sure they support the bands of your preferred provider.
  • Checking your dumbphone against carrier whitelists – Most carriers have a list of approved devices they have verified are compatible with VoLTE. Use your phone’s IMEI number on their website to ensure your dumbphone is on the list.

How to choose the right service provider for your dumbphone

  • Major Network Operators (MNOs) – MNOs are the major telecom corporations (Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T) that own a lot of the physical infrastructure like cell towers. Higher prices and less flexible plans are the tradeoffs for the best coverage and clearer whitelists.
  • Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) – These companies — Mint, Google Fi, Visible, and dozens of smaller MVNOs — essentially rent network space from the larger MNOs and resell their service. Since they have far less overhead, they can offer more competitive rates.
  • Will the provider activate a VoLTE dumbphone – Before making any kind of commitment, you should reach out to the MNO/MVNO provider and ask if their system will allow you to activate a SIM with the dumbphone’s IMEI, or if a dummy activation via smartphone will be possible.
  • Manually editing APN settings – While the provider may provision VoLTE services, it doesn’t always automatically program the Access Point Name (APN) settings on the phone. You my need to manually edit the settings to ensure MMS works.

What kind of SIM does your dumbphone need?

  • Physical nano SIM cards are the most common for dumbphones.
  • Digital eSIMs are rarely supported by dumbphones.

Can I still group message on my dumbphone?
Shows how the chain of communication can break between RCS enabled smartphones and MMS dumbphones for users wondering can I still group chat with my dumbphone.

The ability to continue participating in group chats is a common concern for people considering a dumbphone. After all, many families and friend groups are spread far apart, and we’ve come to rely on the convenience of group chats not only to coordinate meetups but also to maintain that feeling of connectedness across long distances. So, can you still use group messaging on your dumbphone?

Understanding the difference between SMS, MMS, and RCS

People curious about switching to dumbphones have good reason to wonder about their group chats. While smartphones use the latest messaging protocols that mirror some of the same features of third-party chat apps, dumbphones are mostly limited to the old standards. Let’s first take a quick look at the differences between these protocols to understand how chats with a dumbphone can sometimes break.

  • SMS: The old-school texting standard – The universal text-only fallback that all devices can use.

  • MMS: The old-school picture and group messaging standard – Multimedia Messaging Service, or MMS, allows mobile users to send photos, video, audio, and GIFs — a massive upgrade from the simple plain text of SMS. MMS are generally the most advanced protocol that dumbphones use in group chats.

  • RCS: The modern smartphone standard that replaces SMS/MMS – RCS, or Rich Communication Services, is Google’s effort to establish a new standard for high resolution media messaging. It’s meant to be the modern successor to SMS/MMS, and includes a lot of the same rich features (read receipts, typing indicators, reactions) that were previously only available in third-party apps like WhatsApp.

  • iMessage: Apple’s answer to RCS – While RCS is the new messaging standard for all devices that run on Android regardless of manufacturer, iMessage is Apple’s proprietary answer that does the same thing, but for Apple devices only. iMessages are also IP-based, just routed through Apple’s own servers.

Why do these modern messaging protocols sometimes break group chats that include dumbphones?

Let’s say that a group chat has two Android smartphone users and one dumbphone user. When a smartphone user sends an RCS message to the chat, the messaging app should check the status of the recipients, and it should confirm that the other smartphone is RCS-capable and the dumbphone is not. In theory, the fallback to a non-RCS protocol should be triggered for the dumbphone user, which is MMS for group chats. iMessage should function in the same way.

Problem: The dumbphone’s number is still registered to iMessage services from a previous smartphone.

While the fallback to SMS/MMS mechanism works pretty well for Android’s RCS, the same can’t be said for iMessage. In practice, the dumbphone user often the dumbphone user often they won’t receive the message at all. One of the most common issues is that the dumbphone’s number was perviously used with an iPhone, and the number is still registered to iMessage services. So, when the sender’s smartphone checks the status of the dumbphone user, it appears to be an iMessage-enabled device, and no conversion to MMS occurs. The message simply goes out into the void.

Solution: Deactivate iMessage on the old phone and/or deregister the number from iMessage services.

By following the steps below, you might solve one of the most common root causes of sender devices failing to recognize your device as not being iMessage-capable.

If you still have the phone:

Put the SIM card back in, go to Settings > Apps > Messages > toggle iMessage to OFF. Also, go to Settings > Apps > FaceTime > toggle FaceTime to OFF.

If you no longer have the phone:

If you don’t have the iPhone, use the Apple Deregister iMessage online portal. Scroll down to “No longer have your iPhone” and follow the steps.

NOTE: Some users have reported having to wait 30 days before receiving group messages again.

Apple’s RCS integration complicates things.

With the introduction of RCS to Apple devices as of iOS 18, an extra obstacle was added for dumbphone users in group chats with iPhone users. For whatever reason, the integration of Apple into Google’s RCS server doesn’t perfectly recognize when RCS is disabled on Android phones, which technically includes most dumbphones that run some stripped-down version of Android. Therefore, instead of falling back to an MMS message, an iPhone may still try to push an RCS message that a dumbphone is unable to receive.

F1 Pro Aspen
I’m a 31 year-old professional who was feeling overwhelmed with a computer in my pocket. The F1 Pro has changed my life for the better. My only regret is that I didn’t purchase one of your devices sooner. I may never go back to a smartphone. Since switching to the F1, I’ve been far more focused and ‘present’. I’ve cut back on 1-2 hours of useless scrolling and I’ve achieved a significantly higher level of productivity. With the time I’ve saved, I’ve been reaching out to old friends I hadn’t spoken to in many years. I’ve read more and interacted with people around on a deeper level. Thank you for doing what you do.

F1 Pro Cypress
I absolutely love this phone. Coming from the previous F1, it’s much more sturdy, has an excellent battery life, and is easy to customize. The fact that it has a touchscreen and hotspot just make it that much more functional, but none of that gets in the way of its basic purpose of being a simple, non-distracting device. Voice-to-text works incredibly well, and Sunbeam is very responsive and helpful whenever I have questions or issues with the phone. And, of course, it’s a delight to have a flip phone again.

F1 Horizon Bluebird
I really like my new Bluebird phone! It the things a want but without distractions. It seems to be a little bit sturdier than the Orchid I had before. The vibration motor is definitely stronger. I appreciate this because I usually don’t like my phone to be ringing and now I can let it on vibrate and still feel it in my pocket.

F1 Pro Maple
Previous Orchid owner. The F1 Pro is much more durable feeling. There are covers on the port, a rubber ring along the back battery cover, and small rubber edges along the top and bottom of the phone (I assume for light drops). The hinge feels more durable than my orchid. If you need increased water resistance, I recommend the F1 Pro models. My favorite is the charging cradle. It’s so easy to drop in and charges very quickly.
